Alaska State Tideland Surveys

When a decision to lease or conveyance of State-owned tidelands is approved, an Alaska State Tideland Survey is required. The first step in the process is a written request for survey instructions to be issued. To be included in this letter:

  1. Your name and address
  2. The location of the tidelands applied for, along with the ADL casefile number.
  3. The name and address of your surveyor. The surveyor is required to be a Professional Land Surveyor registered in Alaska.
  4. Survey Instruction fee of $225.

In the majority of tideland surveys, at least a portion of the survey involves surveying the boundary between the tidelands and the uplands. This involves determining the location of the Mean High Water line. Download the 2002 Survey Conference paper (PDF) for more information on Alaska Tideland Surveys, including a description of the proper procedure for locating the MHW line.

After the survey, plats must be submitted to the DNR Survey Section for review. The review fee is $200 for the first parcel plus $50 for each additional parcel, tract or lot created by the survey. For a list of the survey fees covered by regulation, see this link.
