The 3-mile long freshwater lake is part of the productive Paul's and Laura Lakes salmon spawning system. Red salmon enter Paul's Lake in mid-June and silvers enter during August. These fish must journey two miles through Paul's Lake and up a cascading creek before entering Laura Lake. Because Laura Lake is two miles from saltwater and is at an elevation of 160 feet, salmon struggling to enter the lake are beginning spawn; they are no longer bright in color. Fishing is typically much better in Paul's Lake, which can be reach with an approximately 1 hour hike.

The cabin is approximately 12'x14' with a wood stove, 6 bunk style sleeping platforms to fit a maximum of six people, a basic supply of cooking pots, pans, and utensils for six people. Visitors should plan to bring any additional gear including a cook stove, lantern or LED lighting, sleeping pad and any gear or supplies they rely upon. The location offers great opportunities for hunting, fishing, kayaking and exploring. The cabin is located approximately 50 feet from the lakeshore, although water is readily available from the lake, it is recommended to bring your own supply of water for drinking and other needs or visitors are advised to purify the lake water before use. The Lake may freeze as early as November 1, please plan and monitor your travel plans accordingly for the season.

A primitive, but marked, 1.7 mile trail leads from the cabin to Paul's Lake. The trail is muddy and difficult to follow at times. Kodiak Brown bears, Sitka black-tailed deer, Roosevelt elk, and fox may be found in the area. Hunters should bring an electric fence to prevent bears gaining access to meat hung in trees. Some visitors may want to bring a canoe, kayak or inflatable watercraft to explore the lake's extensive fingers.

Some private (native corporation) lands adjacent to the park may require special permits to access. If you plan to enter these areas, check landowner requirements and policies.

Location:
Laura Lake is located on the north central section of Afognak Island roughly 2 1/2 miles from the head of Paul's Bay and the cabin sits in the northern portion of the Lake. Cabin access is via floatplane from the lake.
